Melbourne’s vibrant diversity is especially obvious in its Autumn fashion.

I hit the CBD streets – well, mainly just Little Bourke – on Sunday afternoon to see how people were responding to the city’s finally-cooling weather. It’s not quite cold yet but it’s not warm either, which makes for a wonderful mix of hot and cool weather clothing. Sunday was a day where scarves shared the footpaths with short shots.

One of my favourite outfits was the classic long brown jacket with light brown skirt and white shirt seen below. The outfit is so well coordinated I could believe those surprisingly-matching shopping bags were chosen intentionally.

I’m not sure who the man reminds me of. A young Harrison Ford? Tell me I’m wrong in the comments.

Happily, the long jackets were not restricted to womenswear.

And neither was brown.

Yes, okay, that last one was more green that brown. The colour has a similar feel though. I think this is also the first time I’ve seen any Jeep-branded clothing in the wild.

Not all colour has given way to winter though – leftover summer gear and new season warmers bring something bright to the city.

Of course the shirt above cropped up in the two minutes I had my camera’s picture control set to vivid. I think the shirt actually managed to confuse the automatic white balance too. The lesson? Don’t trust auto anything.

I really appreciate the effort which goes into coordinating matching outfits. Trying to compliment someone else’s look seems a fun challenge.

Of course, Melbourne being Melbourne, the Sunday crowd’s black and white game was strong.

The most notable colour of the day was blue. It seemed to be everywhere, from old-school denim jackets to dresses and cardigans.

While clothing fashions have diverged – there are hardly any puffer vests this year despite UNIQLO Emporium making a feature of them – men’s hair has homogenised. Undercuts seem more dominant than ever, while strong side parts like the one below adorn most other male heads.

I only spotted one top knot.

It’s strange to think undercuts have made the hairstyles of the punks at the top of this page seem normal. What I’m curious to see is how may non-punk close cuts will survive the properly cold weather coming with winter.

American streetwear is growing on me. The outfit below works, though maybe that’s helped by the friendliness of the man inside it.

It is always nice to see what people wear casually in the city. At first glance what the man below is wearing is modern, but it’s really quite old fashioned. Maybe hipsters have warped my interpretation of what a modern look is.

While wandering the streets I had the pleasure of meeting photographer “the curious shadows”. I didn’t catch his real name, but I did get his web address. You can see his photos (they’re good!) by clicking here.
